What Does Extreme Poverty Look Like? By Peggy Snider.

From December 6-13, 2014, FeelGood Staff Shelly Lurie and Peggy Snider joined a CHOICE Humanitarian expedition to Bhorletar, Nepal. CHOICE Humanitarian is one of FeelGood’s Commitment 2030 Fund partners. FeelGood values sending staff into the field to see our partners’ poverty-ending work first hand and to bring those stories home to share with the movement. This is just one of those stories. When you think of extreme poverty, what images come to your mind? Babies with swollen bellies? Ragged and dirty clothing? Crumbling shelters, or possibly, no shelters at all?

Newsflash: The stereotypical image of hunger and poverty the media projects isn’t true. Most images we carry are actually of people and places experiencing famine or natural disaster. While those are real stories, real people, and real situations that are surely exhausting, demeaning, and frustrating, that isn’t what chronic, extreme poverty looks like.

One of FeelGood’s core values is that all of humanity is one, that we’re all global brothers and sisters. My free-spirited heart embraced this idea when I first heard it–as a college student five years ago–but, after my collection of experiences traveling for four weeks to three countries in Southeast Asia last month, it was validated to the core. During my travels, I came to know that our deepest desire as human beings is for connection.

How did I come to see this? Through my experiences in Nepal on a CHOICE Humanitarian Expedition this past December, as well as what I gathered via personal adventures afterward.

How does one put into words a trip to the other side of the world? A trip that brings together people who seemingly have nothing in common? At first glance, I am not at all like many people in Nepal. I was raised in a cookie cutter suburb of Rochester, New York. My whole life, I’ve lived a comfortable, middle-class, cushy existence without any question of where I will get my next meal or if I will get an education. I’ve never had to stay out of school to take care of my younger siblings or to help my mom harvest food for the day. Common worries in my life have been if I get a schedule with no Friday classes, if I’m wearing the “right” clothes, and if I’ve actually eaten too much food.
